How Porcupines Mate, the Bizarre Sex Habits of Giraffes (and Much, Much More)

In this episode of The Brain Food Show, we start by looking at whether or not male humans can get pregnant and carry a baby to full term naturally. (Spoiler- yes and yes. And even breastfeed too! It doesn’t even require fancy science or advanced medical techniques.)

Moving on to the meat of today’s episode, we jump into a variety of bizarre animal mating practices, starting with the somewhat humorous mating practices of the giraffe, looking at how porcupines mate without serious injury, banana slugs, the evil that is the male duck, and more!

On another note, if you could do us a huge favor and rate and review this show in whatever podcasting platform you’re using (including hopefully giving us some feedback related to the new format), we would be extremely grateful. Thanks!

  • YES!! Can’t wait to hear the new ep! I love animal hookups!

  • Hi, I really liked this release. I adore animals, absolutely everyone. I was surprised that the sex of giraffes is extremely short, the penetration itself can last about a second. But the prelude to it is somewhat strange. So, the male should push the female into the thigh, after which she urinates. A male giraffe tries a potential partner’s urine to determine if there is a hormone in the urine that is released during ovulation. If the test is positive, the game begins. The female slowly moves away from the partner, and he tries to jump on her. Did you know that, a quote from Wikipedia: “A giraffe has only two gaits: walking and galloping. Walking is done by moving the legs on one side of the body at the same time, then doing the same on the other side. When galloping, the hind legs move around the front legs before the latter move forward, and the tail will curl up. The animal relies on the forward and backward motions of its head and neck to maintain balance and the counter momentum while galloping.327–29 The giraffe can reach a sprint speed of up to 60 km/h (37 mph), and can sustain 50 km/h (31 mph) for several kilometres”, source -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giraffe.

  • Won’t play on my computer at work. How about an effing written version?

  • Otters are another weird example. The male often causes several damage to the female by biting on the ears, often chewing them off. The males can get so wrapped up in the act they will drown the female!
