Macabre Part 2: How Shrunken Heads Were Made

In this episode of The Brain Food Show, we begin by discussing a random quick fact involving the parents of Ferris Bueller on Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

We then move on to discussing the show’s sponsor, Dashlane, which is a great free password management service. You can also get a free month of their premium version and then 10% off thereafter by using the coupon code “brainfood”. Either way, please do go check them out using this link. Thanks!

Next we move into the main content for today’s episode which is discussing how exactly people used to get human heads to shrink and why they did this in the first place.

Moving on from that, we look at the fascinating saga of famed philosopher Jeremy Bentham’s head and body.

Finally we move into some feedback and then an interesting Star Trek Fact related to skeletons.

And for those interested:

On another note, if you could do us a huge favor and rate and review this show in whatever podcasting platform you’re using (including hopefully giving us some feedback related to the new format), we would be extremely grateful. Thanks!

  • Hey! Just wanted to let you know that your’s is the first podcast I’ve listened to and I am addicted! Thank you for making my commute so much more enjoyable! Excited for next week’s show 🙂

  • Hi! Just listening to the Podcast… and the Riker Manoeuvre. This is the way warriors used to sit down when they met with friends or colleagues. It has two purposes – firstly it means you have to turn your back on the people at table, and second that you’ll have the back to the chair in front of you (assuming you reversed the chair when you sat down). Having the back of the chair protecting your chest prevented anyone at the table from stabbing you.

Not a very trusting lot, obviously.

Love the cast, loved the episode, keep up the great work!!!

  • Hello! Even tho I usually admire your meticulous research, this time I have to jump in. Jibaros is a despective name that literally means savages and was used by the spanish conquistadores to dehumanize and humiliate the indigenous people of Ecuador and PerĂş. There’s actually more than one tribe grouped in this term, including the shuar, ashuar and humabisa people. As an Ecuadorean myself I find crucial to educate people on this matter. Even if a history of injustice cannot be erased by changing the language, calling them by the name they choose (instead of the one imposed on them) is the least we can do to show respect towards them and their culture. Hope you understand! Keep up the good work ^^

  • 16 minutes in & you guys are still talking about passwords – is this a show or one long ad?
