  • Also, the proper pronunciation of “apoptosis” is actually like “APO-tosis”. The second “p” should be silent (as part of the Greek root word ptosis). TODAY YOU FOUND THIS OUT!

  • Actually, you found out wrong. The name is derived from the Dutch and it is pronounced somewhat closer to “grooning”, but with a short “oo” sound, so not like in “moon” but more like a quickly spoken “shoe”. Also the G in the beginning is one of the coughing-up-hairball kind like you hear in other languages sometimes.

  • @Daven: Goes to show how little people know about themselves… 🙂 JK The right to the pronounciation of a (last) name rests with the bearer of that name, I think. So if Mat says its “Graining”, I’ll yield. 🙂

    By the way, do you know the song “Danke Schön”? Americans pronounce it (singing): Danke shain, when actually it is Danke shún, with the sound like in surfing but spoken longer.

  • Actually, his last name is pronounced “Grenning”, not “Graining”. — Trying to say “schön” as an american is like getting the “The” right as a german. Even knowing how to pronounce it, your tounge is not trained for it.
